As David Warner looks to formally call time on his Test career in early January next year, speculations around Steve Smith’s future in the Test arena have also become a major talking point in recent times. But according to Smith’s long-time manager Warren Craig, the Aussie batting stalwart does not intend to follow in Warner’s footsteps.

The 34-year-old claims to have some unfulfilled ambitions that he wants to accomplish before hanging his boots for his national side. Moreover, Smith is on the cusp of a very special milestone in his career as he nears a staggering 10,000-run landmark in Test cricket. If that were to happen, Smith would become only the fourth Australian batter to achieve this feat.

Besides, Smith is also keen to represent Australia in the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and United States and would also love to be a part of a much-anticipated series against India in Australia next year.

Here's what Smith's manager said on his client's retirement plans

“I can debunk that (retirement) at this point in time. He’s still talking about things he wants to achieve.” Smith’s manager Warren Craig said to the SMH.

While Warner has indicated his intention to retire from the Test format following the conclusion of the upcoming Test series against Pakistan in January, Smith was also asked to comment on his future for the next 12 months. The Kogarah-born cricketer gave no clear indications about his future plans.

Smith’s form in Tests in the past year has been quite extraordinary. Since 2022, he has averaged 50 and has succeeded in bettering his overall Test average which currently sits at a staggering 58.61 ahead of the series against Pakistan and the West Indies.
