Exactly on this day in 2022, India faced Bangladesh in a virtual series decider match at the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. The Men in Blue were desperately looking to get back to winning ways after being outclassed by Mehidy Hasan’s heroics in a nail-biting run chase.

What transpired an year ago

Bangladesh finished their first innings with a strong score of 271-7. The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma got injured while fielding the ball in the slips. He dropped a catch in the slips off the bowling of Mohammad Siraj and the ball landed on both his palms, thus injuring his left thumb in the process.

India did not make a very ideal start to their run chase. Kohli and Dhawan were back in the hut inside the first three overs of the second innings. Subsequently, Sundar and Rahul also perished in quick time as India slipped to 65-4 inside 19 overs. It was all down to Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel to do the repairing job for Team India. The duo put on a valiant 107-run stand to get India back in the run chase.

Owing to a thumb injury, Rohit was sent to bat down the order at number 9. At the time of his arrival, India still required 65 runs off 44 deliveries with three wickets in hand. However, the Indian skipper did not let his injury affect his playing style one bit. With wickets tumbling at a rapid rate, Rohit went on the counter-offensive and threw the kitchen sink at nearly every delivery he faced.

In the last 17 balls, Rohit took the likes of Ebadot Hosain and Mustafizur Rahman to the cleaners by smashing some unbelievable sixes.

Courtesy of his brutal onslaught, Rohit was able to take the game deep for Team India. With 20 runs needed in the final over, Rohit was in no mode to surrender as he smashed Rahman for 2 fours and 1 six to keep India very much in the hunt. However, he failed to get his timing right in the last ball of the match when exactly six runs were needed and as a result, Bangladesh eventually went on to claim a narrow 5-run victory.
