West Indies legend Chris Gayle pulverized his former national teammate Ashley Nurse during their recent faceoff in the Eliminator of the 2023 Legends League Cricket season. Taking the field for Gujarat Giants against Gautam Gambhir’s India Capitals, Gayle pumped out 84 scintillating runs for his side in a tense run-chase at Surat’s Lalbhai Contractor Stadium.

At one stage of the innings, the batting barbarian even crashed India Capitals spinner Ashley Nurse for four successive sixes to accumulate 29 runs off a single over.

Chasing 224 runs to secure a place in the second qualifier, boundary raider Chris Gayle took first guard for Gujarat Giants alongside fellow batting legend Jacques Kallis. The 44-year-old West Indies cricketer started cautiously as he chiseled his way to a 40-ball 45* after the first 13 overs of the innings.

With 87 runs more to get from the final 42 balls, Gayle pummeled fellow national and India Capitals spinner Ashley Nurse for four huge sixes and an effortless boundary through the covers to pump out 29 runs from a single over. His brutal power-hitting catapulted him from 45* to 74* in the space of just deliveries and reduced the equation down to 58 from the final six overs.

Despite Chris Gayle’s gung-ho approach towards the death overs, Gujarat Giants found themselves 12 runs short of their target by the end of their 20 overs. The legendary West Indies opener himself managed to add just 10 more runs following his assault on Nurse, as he was dismissed by Isuru Udana after making a 55-ball 84.

Following Gujarat Giants’ 12-run defeat, Gambhir’s India Capitals secured a Qualifier 2 berth, where they will be facing Harbhajan Singh’s Manipal Tigers on December 7 at the same Surat venue.
