Team India clinched its series-opening first ODI against Ireland courtesy of splendid half-centuries from Pratika Rawal and Tejal Hasabnis. Stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana also carved a swift 41 at the top to scale a huge ODI record. In Australia, hard-hitting radical Tim David unleashed his second run-chase masterclass for the Hobart Hurricanes in the space of a week.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Friday, January 10.
Pratika Rawal, Hasabnis Take India 1-0 Up Over Ireland
The Indian women’s team walloped Ireland by six wickets and with 15.3 overs to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series at Rajkot’s Saurashtra Stadium. Batting first, Ireland hauled 238-7 courtesy of captain courageous Gaby Lewis (92 off 129) after the visitors had slipped to 56-4 at one stage. Leah Paul at number five also notched up her half-century with 59 from 73 balls.
For India, Priya Mishra struck twice in her nine-over spell, while Titas Sadhu, debutant Sayali Satghare and senior spinner Deepti Sharma picked up a wicket each. Chasing 239, Indian opener Pratika Rawal and middle-order batter Tejal Hasabnis charted composed half-centuries and shared a match-defining 116-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Smriti Mandhana Fastest Indian To 4,000 Runs
India’s stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana crafted a fluent 41 off 29 balls during her 70-run opening partnership with Pratika Rawal against Ireland in Rajkot. Through the course of her match-winning knock, Mandhana completed 4,000 runs in ODI cricket to become only the second Indian cricketer in history to scale the landmark figure. Moreover, the blistering opening batter also became the fastest Indian and the third quickest overall, taking just 95 innings to complete 4,000 ODI runs after Belinda Clark’s 86 and Meg Lanning’s 89 innings respectively.
Tim David Fuels Hurricanes Win With Whirlwind 68*
Tim David unleashed his second successive match-winning 60 for the Hobart Hurricanes, both within the space of a week, this time crashing the Sydney Thunder attack at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Chasing 165 runs in match number 29 of the BBL 2024-25 season, David clattered four boundaries and six huge maximums to race to 68* from just 38 balls.
Tim David’s whirlwind effort lifted the Hurricanes from 59-3 to a remarkable six-wicket victory with more than three overs to spare. The outcome also helped the Hurricanes take the top spot on the BBL 2024-25 points table.
Varun Aaron Announces Retirement
Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron announced his retirement from “representative cricket” through a social media post. The 35-year-old recently represented the Jharkhand team in the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy season, where he picked up just three wickets in four matches. Aaron had already announced his retirement from red-ball cricket following his match-winning spells against Rajasthan during the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season.
A product of the MRF Pace Academy, Varun Aaron regularly clocked around the 150kph when he burst on to the international scene in 2011. However, injuries and non-selection limited his career to just nine Tests and six ODIs for Team India. Aaron remained a regular figure in domestic cricket, and he also played 52 IPL games for five different franchises up until 2022.
