Durban’s Super Giants got off to a flier against Pretoria Capitals in the second match of the SA20 2024-25 season at the Kingsmead in Durban. After captain Keshav Maharaj won the toss and opted to bat first, his openers Bryce Parsons and Matthew Breetzke took the attack to the Capitals bowlers, and extracted 67 runs without a wicket in the first six overs of the match.

Breetzke, in particular, set off Super Giants’ top-order belligerence with a 16-run over off Daryn Dupavillon early in the game.

Matthew Breetzke brings out the ‘Flamingo Boundary’

Durban’s Super Giants opener Matthew Breetzke welcomed Pretoria Capitals fast bowler Daryn Dupavillon with a boundary and a six in the third over of the match. The opening batter also stepped forward and clipped Dupavillon over mid-wicket for a regal boundary later in the same over.

Notably, Breetzke did so with much panache, as he lifted his back leg on his follow through to add a ‘Flamingo’ effect to his scoring shot.

Matthew Breetzke ended up extracting 16 runs from the first Daryn Dupavillon over of the innings as the Super Giants raced to 27-0 after three overs.

Overall, Breetzke made a swift 33 from 20 balls with five boundaries and a six before he was holed out by Rilee Rossouw off Senuran Muthusamy shortly after the opening powerplay. Bryce Parsons also scored 47 runs from just 28 deliveries with five boundaries and two sixes as the Super Giants raced to a team 100 in just 10.4 overs.

Durban’s Super Giants middle order batters and seasoned South African campaigners Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen failed to justify Parsons and Breetzke’s powerplay blitz as the two cricketers were dismissed by Muthusamy and Liam Livingstone without any notable contribution.
