Mumbai’s cricketing heart, the Wankhede Stadium, is all set to celebrate 50 glorious years, and the celebration is going to be nothing short of legendary. From Sachin Tendulkar to Rohit Sharma, the biggest names in cricket will come together to mark this golden milestone.

Mumbai Cricket Association Plans Grand Tribute for Wankhede’s 50th Year

The main event is on January 19, but the celebrations kick off a week earlier, with a lineup of events that promises to keep fans buzzing.

When it comes to celebrating Wankhede, the MCA is going all out. Big cricketing names like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Rohit Sharma will headline the event. Joining them will be stars like Suryakumar Yadav, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravi Shastri, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Diana Edulji.

MCA President Ajinkya Naik summed it up perfectly:

“As we mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic Wankhede Stadium, I warmly invite all cricket fans to be part of this momentous occasion. Our legendary heroes will join us in the celebrations, and together, we will pay tribute to the rich legacy of the Wankhede Stadium which is a pride of Mumbai. Let’s make this celebration truly unforgettable.”

A Full Week of Festivities

The celebrations kick off on January 12, starting with a cricket match between MCA officials and Consul Generals. On January 15, the focus will be on the unsung heroes of Mumbai cricket—the groundsmen, who will be honoured with a health camp and lunch to thank them for their tireless efforts.

The grand evening on January 19 will be hosted by Mandira Bedi and Prasanna Sant, with performances by Avadhoot Gupte and music duo Ajay-Atul. To top it all off, there’ll be a spectacular laser show that promises to light up the night.

The Wankhede Stadium has been home to some of cricket’s greatest moments, from India’s 2011 World Cup win to unforgettable Test matches. To commemorate this incredible journey, a coffee table book and a commemorative postal stamp will be unveiled on January 19.

Adding to the nostalgia, the Mumbai team that played the stadium’s first-ever first-class match in 1974 will also be felicitated. It’s a fitting way to honour those who were part of Wankhede’s very first chapter.
