Shubman Gill To Captain Gujarat Titans In IPL 2024 As Hardik Pandya Joins MI

Gujarat Titans (GT) have confirmed they will have a new captain in Shubman Gill ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The decision had to take after Hardik Pandya, the IPL 2022-title winning captain, decided to return to his former franchise Mumbai Indians (MI).


There were quite a few options for Gujarat Titans to choose from as Hardik’s successor, which included the likes of Kane Williamson and Rashid Khan. Yet, the Titans decided to give the captain’s hat to Gill, who is projected as the next big thing in Indian cricket.


"I am delighted and proud to assume the captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team," Gill said in a statement, released by Gujarat Titans. "We have had two exceptional seasons and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket."

Gill, 24 now, made his IPL debut in 2018 after becoming the Man of the Tournament in India’s Under-19 title-winning campaign under Prithvi Shaw’s captaincy. Since then, he has been reaping rewards for both club and country.

Needless to say, IPL 2023 was his first major breakthrough season, in which he proved to the world he could be equally clinical in the T20 format as well. There, across 17 outings, he aggregated a staggering tally of 890 runs.

Whether Gill has the same impact as a skipper will take time to determine. The Titans still have a lot of work to do to improve their squad, as they head to the auctions with an INR 38.15 crore budget, the highest of all. As for the bidding war, it will take place on December 19 in Dubai.
