JioStar has reportedly expressed its intention to step down as the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) media partner prematurely. The deal was originally supposed to run from 2024 to 2027 and was valued at $3 billion.

The Economic Times reported that the media company has informed ICC about their inability to continue further due to deep financial losses. Additionally, the losses were further intensified after the ban on real-money gaming in India. This has left ICC looking for a new media partner ahead of the marquee T20 World Cup 2026.

The ICC have reportedly approached other platforms such as Sony Sports Network, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video to take over the deal and complete the tenure. However, they have not shown a keen interest due to pricing concerns, putting ICC in deep waters.

“JioStar more than doubled its provisions for expected losses on onerous sports contracts in 2024-25 to Rs 25,760 crore, up from Rs 12,319 crore a year earlier,” the report stated.

The T20 World Cup is scheduled for February 2026, and the ICC has less than two months to find a new media partner and negotiate a deal with them. However, it is not expected to take very long because of the high popularity of the sport in India.

India gears up to host T20 World Cup 2026

Meanwhile, defending champions India are set to host the next edition of the T20 World Cup. The matches will get underway on February 7th, and the final will be played on March 8th. This is the first time India will host the T20 World Cup since 2016.

The new-look Indian team, under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, will be the favourites to win this edition. Australia, England, New Zealand, and South Africa can also never be ruled out of contention to lift the trophy.
