Varun Chakravarthy tears through Proteas with a spellbinding fifer
Away challenges are always hard for any visiting team, but when the challenge comes on the Protea soil becomes much tougher. On the hard and fast surface of South Africa, with extra bounce and significant pace, the surface turns into a nightmare for the batters, but the bowlers have a smooth outing.
And in Gqeberha, Varun Chakravarthy turned that very battlefield into his stage, delivering a magical fifer that stunned the cricket world. In the second T20I match of the series, India batted first and crumbled under lethal Protea attack. After the Men in Blue ended their innings in just 124 runs.
Coming to defending the total, the Indian bowlers unleashed their fury. Coming to the attack in the 6th over, Varun Chakravarthy marked an early breakthrough, dismissing Aiden Markram in just 3 runs. After removing Reeza Hendricks, he deepened South Africa’s woes.
In the 11th over, he secured his third scalp after dismissing Marco Jansen in just seven runs. Coming back in the attack in the 13th over, he delivered double blows as he removed Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller and shattered the Protea lineup.
With a remarkable spell of 5/17, Varun Chakravarthy registered the maiden T20I fifer in his career. Chasing the 125-run total, Proteas won the match, but Varun Chakravarthy shone even in the heartbreaks. Firsts are always special, and a fifer on Protea soil will forever glow in India–South Africa T20I history.
