Baroda’s wicket-keeper batter Amit Passi had a dream start to his T20 career on Monday during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) match at the Gym Khana Stadium in Hyderabad. Playing his very first T20 game, Passi scored a brilliant century and matched the world record for the highest score on T20 debut.
Passi got his chance because India’s regular wicket-keeper Jitesh Sharma is away on national duty for the South Africa series. With Hardik Pandya also unavailable for the same reason, Baroda needed someone to step up, and Passi did exactly that.
The 26-year-old was sent to open the innings and immediately took control of the game against the Services team.
Notably, he reached his half-century in just 24 balls, hitting boundaries with ease. Once he settled in, he shifted gears and continued attacking the bowlers.
Amit Passi shines on his T20 debut for Baroda
Passi reached his century on 98 by smashing his ninth six, completing the milestone in only 44 balls. This made him just the third Indian batter to score a T20 hundred on debut.
Passi eventually scored 114 runs off 55 balls, including 10 fours and nine sixes. This score is now the joint-highest T20 debut score in history. He now shares the record with former Pakistan cricketer Bilal Asif, who scored 114 on his T20 debut for Sialkot Stallions in 2015. Another notable debut century came from Moin Khan, who had scored 112.

Thanks to Passi’s explosive knock, Baroda posted a strong total of 220 for 5 in 20 overs. For Services, Abhishek Vivekanand Tiwari was the most successful bowler, taking three wickets for 33 runs.
Despite this big total and Passi’s record-breaking performance, Baroda’s chances in the tournament remain slim. They are part of a tough Elite Group C, and even a huge win in this match is unlikely to take them into the Super League stage.
