Captain Shubman Gill and in-form opener Yashasvi Jaiswal led India’s batting charge on Day 1 of the second Test against England. Chris Woakes picked up two key wickets for the hosts, while Ben Stokes won his own personal duel against Jaiswal by denying the left-hander off his century.

Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of Day 1 of the second Test match, as it panned out at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Wednesday, July 2.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Breathes Fire In His Attacking 87

Getting invited to bat first, India lost opener KL Rahul early in the innings for a sluggish two to English paceman Chris Woakes. Karun Nair unfurled some gorgeous drives in his fighting 31 from 50 balls while sharing a counterattacking 80-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal before falling to Brydon Carse at the brink of Lunch break.

Jaiswal marched on in the post-lunch session to reach a fiery 87 from just 107 balls with 13 elegant boundaries. The youngster took on Ben Stokes in a heated exchange before getting toppled by the England captain as India lost its third wicket at the time of reaching 161 in 45.1 overs.

Shubman Gill Builds On Jaiswal Momentum

Rishabh Pant got holed out at long-on to Zak Crawley off Shoaib Bashir, before comeback man Nitish Kumar Reddy got castled by Chris Woakes for just a single as India slipped to 211-5. Captain Shubman Gill at number four remained defiant in his approach, as the cricketer shared a 99-run unbeaten partnership with Ravindra Jadeja to take India past the 300-run mark before stumps.

Gill brought up his seventh Test century and his second successive this series by scoring 114* off 216 balls, while Jadeja reached 41* off 67 as India will now resume their first innings on Day 2 at 310-5 in 85 overs.
