Ishan Kishan cracked a record-breaking double century back in December 2022 during India’s tour of Bangladesh. In the third ODI of the series, the blistering opening batter plundered 210 runs off just 131 balls with 24 fours and 10 huge sixes at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.
While Kishan managed to break a slew of records through his batting mayhem, the cricketer also inadvertently shattered Shikhar Dhawan’s ambitions of extending his international career, as admitted by the legendary left-hander himself.
One Knock, Two Outcomes: How Kishan’s 210 Sealed Dhawan’s Exit
The international career of Shikhar Dhawan came to an abrupt end, as he played his final match in India colors in December 2022 during an ODI against Bangladesh in Chattogram. Opening the innings in the game, the occasion also coincided with Ishan Kishan smacking a whirlwind double ton in a match-winning cause for India.
As per Dhawan’s own admission, he realized that his time with Team India was likely over owing to the rise of belligerent stroke-makers and power-hitters in the game. While speaking in an interview with the Hindustan Times, Dhawan said:
“I was scoring lots of 50s, I didn't score a 100, but I scored lots of 70s. When Ishan Kishan scored that 200, my instinct told me, alright boy, this can be the end of your career. An inner voice came to me. And that's what happened. Then I remember my friends came over to, you know, give me that emotional support. They thought that I would be very down. But I was chilling, I was enjoying.”
Shikhar Dhawan confirmed his retirement from international cricket last year. During his playing days, the legendary left-hander carved a lasting legacy with his flamboyant stroke play, consistent performances in ICC tournaments, and iconic partnerships at the top of the order.
He was part of the Indian team that lifted the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy in England, and the one that defeated Australia by a 4-0 margin in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series that same year.
