In a significant development, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are all set to release their captain Shreyas Iyer for the IPL 2025 mega-auction. According to a report from Cricbuzz, Iyer asked for a massive fee from KKR, which the defending champions were not convinced of, and the talks between the two parties ended on a sour note.
Notably, Shreyas Iyer led the KKR to their third title in IPL 2024 and was solid with the bat. However, for the last few weeks, he was in the news as there are rumours that KKR are not looking at their captain as top-retention.
Iyer Asks For A Massive Amount To Be Retained
On Tuesday, October 29, Times of India reported that KKR and Iyer initiated a dialogue regarding the retention for the first time and the latest reports hint that Iyer will leave the club and go under the hammer at the IPL 2025 mega-auction.
Iyer was proving to be a tough negotiator and wanted massive money to extend his services for KKR. At present, the right-hand batter earns 12.25 crores. However, the report suggested that KKR can still avail of Iyer's services via RTM, but for that too they need to wait till the auction.
Notably, all ten franchises are set to release the retention list on October 31 and the fans can expect Iyer's name to be missing from the list. There were reports that the defending champions are looking at Phil Salt, Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh, and Harshit Rana as their retentions.
Uncertainty Regarding Russell's Retention
Nonetheless, other teams would turn their attention towards Iyer, who is also a captaincy material, and the right-hand batter might achieve the desired amount at the auction table.
Other than Iyer, KKR are also contemplating retaining Andre Russell, who has been with the club for the longest time. Notably, Russell is 36 and his age is one of the primary reasons behind KKR's possible decision on the Caribbean.
