The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a diktat about players needing to feature in the Ranji Trophy before becoming eligible for Team India place.

However, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan have quite openly opted not to play India's premier First-Class competition lately, which could cause both players to lose out on their BCCI Central Contracts.

As per Times of India, the BCCI are soon to hand out new central contracts to players for the upcoming season, which Iyer and Kishan, won't be a part of due to their absence from domestic red-ball season

"The selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, has almost finalised the list of centrally contracted players for the 2023-24 season too, which the BCCI will announce soon. Kishan and Iyer are likely to be excluded from that list, as both haven't been playing domestic cricket despite the BCCI's diktat to do so," TOI wrote in a report.

Currently, Iyer is included in Grade B earning INR 3 crore per year, while Kishan is a part of Grade C earning INR 1 crore annually.

Kishan, who has taken a break from cricket citing mental health, has missed all of Jharkhand's Ranji Trophy matches this year, while Iyer, who was dropped from India's Test squad recently, has decided to give Mumbai's ongoing quarterfinals tie a miss due to injury concerns

Iyer, 29, has played 125 internationals for India since 2017, amassing 4,298 runs with six centuries, and 31 fifties, while Kishan, aged 25, has appeared in 61 matches for the Men in Blue, slamming 1,807 runs which include one hundred and 14 half-centuries.
