In a significant development, the grandstand at the iconic Junction Oval in St. Kilda has been officially renamed to Shane Warne Stand as a tribute to the late cricketer and his contribution to the sport. Earlier, the stand was named after the Australian football icon Kevin Murray, but this initiative has been taken in order to pay tribute to the late legendary spinner.
Several high-profile attendees attended this ceremony, including Warne's father, Keith, and his daughters, Summer and Brooke, who shared an emotional moment as the stand’s new name was revealed. Other attendees were Australian Test captain Pat Cummins, along with Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell. The ceremony was held just before the start of Match 8 in the One-Day Cup, bringing together a host of Warne's former teammates from Australia, Victoria, and St. Kilda Cricket Club.
Shane Warne's father Emotional Message
Speaking at the ceremony, Cricket Victoria representatives praised Warne's impact on the sport and expressed hope that the renaming would continue to inspire future generations of cricketers. Shane Warne's father also expressed himself and stated that it is a proud day for their family as the name has been etched on the stands forever.
"Today marks a very special and proud day for the Warne family to have a stand named the Shane Warne stand here at the Junction Oval is a wonderful tribute to Shane, who we know would be honoured to be chosen for such an accolade," Keith Warne was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo said at the unveiling.
As proud as Shane would be to know a stand at the Junction Oval bears his name, he would also be thrilled to know that he will now be forever linked with St Kilda Cricket Club and the Junction Oval. On behalf of her family, I'd like to thank Cricket Victoria and St Kilda Cricket Club for their support in honouring Shane with such a wonderful tribute, further enhancing Shane's incredible legacy."
It is important to note that Shane Warne's father contributed memorabilia from his son's illustrious career. The Cricket Victoria has curated this into a permanent exhibition in the foyer of its administration and high-performance centre. This exhibition showcases his cricketing journey from his early days to record-breaking achievements and his prized possessions.
