Bangladesh's ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is facing uncertainty over his participation in the upcoming second Test against India. During the first Test held at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Shakib was unable to bowl due to discomfort in his finger, which he sustained while batting. A delivery from Jasprit Bumrah struck his right hand, causing a bleeding injury that needed immediate medical attention.
In a recent statement, Bangladesh National Cricket Team selector Hannan Sarkar shed light on Shakib’s availability for the second Test. He mentioned that Shakib was deemed fully fit before the first Test in Chennai, but his condition seems to have changed during the match.
"We always have to think before picking Shakib for the next match and there is time before the next match. We will see what condition he is in," Hannan explained.
Shakib’s performance as an all-rounder is crucial for Bangladesh, but his current fitness status has raised concerns. The team has already suffered a heavy defeat in the first Test, losing by 280 runs. Shakib’s absence as a bowler could further weaken the team’s chances in the second Test.
Hannan clarified, “We know the pain in his hand is being discussed. It was not there before the match and many have tried to explain it in different ways. But before the match, we got a 100 percent clearance from the physio before taking him. He was a 100 percent fit then. ”
Hannan stated that a final decision will be made after observing Shakib during practice sessions.
"shakib is such a player that if he can't bowl, he could play as a batter. If he feels he can't bat or bowl then it's a different scenario.
"We are heading to Kanpur tomorrow and today is a day off. We will have two sessions afterwards and we will judge after that. We don't want to make a decision yet. These two days, the physio has kept him under observation. When we get back to the ground, we will get the physio's feedback." Hannan concluded.
How Did Shakib al Hasan Let Bangladesh Down Against India?
Shakib al Hasan, who became the oldest cricketer from Bangladesh to play in a Test match, struggled significantly in the game against India. Despite his vast experience, he scored 57 runs in the two innings, failing to make an impact with the bat. His performance with the ball was equally disappointing.
The left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder went wicketless in the Chennai Test, where he also recorded the most expensive bowling figures in his Test career, conceding 129 runs in 21 overs. His inability to contribute effectively with both bat and ball played a crucial role in Bangladesh's downfall against India.
