In what comes as a major shocker, the veteran all-rounder from New Zealand, Sophie Devine has announced an infinite break from domestic and international cricket. To prioritise her well-being, Devine has decided to pull out from the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 season.

The Women’s Premier League is all set to return with its third season in 2025. WPL 2025 is scheduled to begin on February 14 with defending champions Royals Challengers Bengaluru Women taking on Gujarat Giants Women at the Vadodara.

However, ahead of the curtain raiser of WPL’s brand new edition, RCB-W are hit with a big setback that will likely hamper their squad composition.

Sophie Devine withdraws from WPL 2025

The latest news is that Sophie Devine has taken an indefinite break from cricket. She had consulted with professionals who advised her to take a break. Thus, Devine has decided to withdraw from the remaining season of Super Smash 2024-25 and the subsequent WPL 2025 season.

Devine has been a part of RCB-W since the inauguration of the tournament. Moreover, she captained New Zealand Women when they won the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup. The 35-year-old carries a wealth of experience and his absence will likely cause a huge dent in RCB-W’s composition.

However, at the time of distress, the RCB-W franchise has extended its support to Sophie Devine and backed her decision to prioritise her well-being.

RCB to also miss Sophie Molineux

Before Sophie Devine announced her break, RCB-W were hit with another setback. Australian all-rounder Sophie Molineux, who picked 12 wickets in 10 matches of RCB’s title-winning season in 2024, has been ruled out due to a knee injury. As her replacement, England’s spin-bowling all-rounder Charlie Dean has been brought into the squad. Dean brings her wicket-taking abilities and disciplined economy of 7.28 to RCB’s lineup.
