In the latest development, star batter Sarfaraz Khan is expected to be released from India’s Test squad ahead of the second match against Bangladesh, scheduled to take place at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur from September 27.

According to the reports of PTI, the 26-year-old batter, who missed out on a spot in the playing XI for the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, will likely return to domestic duties for Mumbai in the upcoming Irani Cup 2024.

The year's Irani Cup will be played between Ranji Trophy 2023-24 champions Mumbai and the Rest of India (ROI). The match will be played at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow from October 1 to October 5.

Sarfaraz Khan Likely To Play Irani Cup 2024

It is worth mentioning that Sarfaraz Khan remains part of India's Test squad. However, if he is not included in the playing XI for the Kanpur Test, then there is a chance that MCA might request his release, and he will be included in Mumbai's squad for the Irani Cup.

"Look, Sarfaraz is the only specialist middle-order batter in the squad. Dhruv Jurel is a keeper-batsman and Axar Patel is an all-rounder. What if there is a need for a concussion substitute? But yes, the Irani Cup starts on October 1 and travelling from Kanpur to Lucknow even on September 30 won't be a big deal if the Test match ends early," a BCCI source told PTI.

As for Sarfaraz Khan, he has so far scored 4183 runs in 50 first-class matches so far at an average of 66.39 with 14 centuries and as many fifties to his name.

Shardul Thakur To Play : Tushar Deshpande To Miss Due To Injury

It was earlier declared that Ajinkya Rahane is all prepared to lead the Mumbai in the upcoming Irani Cup. This significant game will also serve as the return to first-class cricket for all-rounder Shardul Thakur following his surgery.

However, Mumbai will have to cope without the services of star pacer Tushar Deshpande, who is currently recuperating from surgery on his ankle and knee. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube will not be part of the Irani Cup squad as they are scheduled to report in Gwalior on October 3 ahead of India's T20I series against Bangladesh starting on October 6.
