On Monday, September 23, in a significant development in domestic cricket, there are reports that Ajinkya Rahane is all set to lead Mumbai in the upcoming edition of Irani Cup 2024. 

According to a report by Cricbuzz, Ajinkya Rahane, who captained Mumbai to their record 42nd Ranji Trophy victory earlier this year, will lead the side. For the unversed, the Irani Cup is an annual tournament where the Ranji Trophy winners take on the Rest of India. This year's Irani Cup will occur from October 1 to October 5 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. 

Shreyas Iyer And Shardul Thakur Set To Feature

Further, the report mentioned that Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur are interested in featuring for Mumbai in the upcoming match. 

Shardul, who has been out of action since June because of ankle surgery. He recently participated in the KSCA tournament, and looks in good shape. The all-rounder will be available for the five-day first-class fixture. The MCA is expected to announce the squad on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a lot is at stake for Iyer, as the right-hand batter is looking to get attention from the selectors after failing to find a place in the squad for the ongoing Bangladesh series. Further, Iyer also failed in the recently concluded Duleep Trophy, which is why he needs to perform in the upcoming Irani Cup.

Mumbai's Historic Win In Ranji Trophy 2024

Mumbai registered a historic win in Ranji Trophy 2023-24 season when they beat Vidarbha in the finals and scripted a 169-runs win. Musheer Khan was the player of the match in the finals as he smashed a century in the second innings. Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur too shone in the finals and scored a fifty-plus score in the first innings.
