Virat Kohli has taken social media by storm with a mysterious tweet that fans believe indirectly refers to his Test retirement. Just days before India’s ODI series against Australia, Kohli posted a motivational message on failure.

Just hours after landing in Australia for the 3-game ODI series, Kohli took to X (formerly Twitter) to say, “The only time you truly fail is when you decide to give up.”

Fans puzzled over Virat Kohli’s motivational message

The post immediately went viral, with fans flooding the comment section to call Virat Kohli out for giving up Test cricket earlier this year. The timing of the tweet, just ahead of a high-profile tour, only added fuel to the fire.

Many fans interpreted Kohli’s message as a reflection on his decision to quit the longest format at the age of 36.

For someone who had repeatedly called Test cricket his “greatest love,” Kohli’s exit from the format left many disappointed.

The former India captain’s career in Tests was nothing short of remarkable, with 9230 runs, 30 centuries, and countless memorable knocks across tough conditions.

His leadership during India’s famous 2018-19 Test series win in Australia is still remembered as one of the team’s greatest achievements.

That being said, Virat Kohli, who retired from T20Is in 2024 and later from Tests during the IPL 2025 season, will, however, feature in the upcoming ODI series under the captaincy of Shubman Gill. The first match will be played on October 19, 2025, in Perth.
