In a surprising turn of events, Chennai Super Kings could give Ruturaj Gaikwad the captain’s hat if MS Dhoni fails to fully recover ahead of the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Many reputed sources, including renowned journalist Mohsin Kamal, confirmed the news on X on Thursday (November 23).

MS Dhoni underwent keyhole knee surgery after leading Chennai Super Kings to the IPL 2023 title, and he has told the media that his participation in the upcoming edition entirely depends on his recovery.

Dhoni, 42, is currently enjoying his retirement at full flow. Recently, he was seen going on a holiday with his wife, Sakshi.

CSK previously gave Ravindra Jadeja leadership duties after Dhoni decided to quit it ahead of IPL 2022. However, things did not go according to plan, and thus, Jadeja had to resign in the middle of the season. Dhoni stepped up yet again and gave them the fifth title in the competition’s history in the following edition.

With Gaikwad willing to be the face of the franchise in the days to come, it's safe to say that Jadeja will no longer be considered CSK's captain.

Not to forget, Gaikwad captains Maharashtra in domestic circuit, and was thought to be one of the captain candidates for India's ongoing five-match T20I series against Australia.
