Quetta Gladiators have been handed a lifeline ahead of their high-voltage Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 Eliminator 1 clash against Islamabad United on Friday, March 15.

After finishing third (Islamabad United) and fourth (Quetta Gladiators) in the points table, both teams, with five victories, four losses, and one no result, are neck and neck as they prepare to face off in a battle that promises fireworks.

PSL 2024: Quetta receive major lift, Islamabad face huge hurdle

The Gladiators' camp is buzzing with the return of star middle-order batsman Sherfane Rutherford, who had temporarily stepped away from the squad on March 9 due to personal reasons. Rutherford's absence was a thorn in Quetta's side during the last three matches, including a nail-biter, leaving a void that was evident on the field.

However, with news of his return to the fold on Wednesday, Quetta Gladiators are breathing a sigh of relief. Rilee Rossouw's men will hope that Rutherford's return is the missing piece of the puzzle in their quest for a second PSL title.

Rutherford has been on a tear in PSL 2024, amassing 151 runs across six innings with a blistering strike rate of 148.03. He left a huge mark earlier in the season with a jaw-dropping performance against Karachi Kings. His brilliance with the bat has been a huge boost for the Gladiators, and his timely return could not have come at a better moment.

On the other hand, Islamabad United faces its own set of challenges as opener Colin Munro's participation hangs by a thread due to a hamstring injury. Munro, a mainstay of Islamabad's batting lineup and among the top run-scorers of the tournament, sustained the injury in a recent game.

The uncertainty surrounding his availability has thrown a spanner in the works for Islamabad. The team's medical staff is on tenterhooks as they deliberate his fitness for the upcoming Eliminator 1. Should Islamabad advance to Eliminator 2, the team staff will take the final call on Munro's participation.
