In other news, Jofra Archer is gearing up to make his return to red-ball cricket after a gap of over four years.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Saturday, June 21.
Pant, Pope Tons; Bumrah And Tongue Spells Light Up Day 2
Indian wicketkeeper and overnight batter Rishabh Pant notched up his seventh Test century by scoring 134 from 178 balls with six sixes and 12 fours. His skipper Shubman Gill was dismissed by Shoaib Bashir early on Day 2 at 147, before Josh Tongue induced a late Indian collapse with a fighting four-wicket haul.
With India hauling 471 runs from 113 overs, Jasprit Bumrah struck early for the visitors with the wicket of Zak Crawley. Ben Duckett bludgeoned a speedy 62, while Ollie Pope finished the day with an unbeaten 100* to his name from just 131 balls. Bumrah picked up two more wickets along the way as England reached 209-3 off 49 overs by stumps.
Jasprit Bumrah Claim Huge Big Records With Fighting Spell
Jasprit Bumrah racked up a number of bowling records through his fighting three-wicket haul against England on Day 2. For starters, the Indian speedster soared past Kagiso Rabada in terms of most Test wickets taken in the first over of an innings since 2021. Bumrah also went past Wasim Akram to become the most successful Asian bowler in SENA countries with 147 wickets.
Furthermore, Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Joe Root for the tenth time in Tests, bringing him on par with Josh Hazlewood and just below Pat Cummins.
Jofra Archer To Make Red-Ball Return, Eyes Test Call-Up
England fast bowler Jofra Archer is set to make his return to red-ball cricket after a gap of more than four years. The cricketer has been named in Sussex squad for their upcoming County Championship Division One 2025 match against Durham in Chester-le-Street.
Archer was sidelined from England’s line-up in the ongoing series against Team India owing to his history with injuries. A prolific outing against Durham might put the speedster back in contention for a potential return to the national squad.
Faf Du Plessis Record Ton In Vain As Unicorns Pip TSK
Texas Super Kings captain and opening batter Faf du Plessis bludgeoned 100 runs from just 51 balls with six fours and seven sixes against San Francisco Unicorns in Dallas in match 10 of the MLC 2025 season. Faf’s innings helped Super Kings mount 198-5 from 20 overs. For the Unicorns, pacemen Haris Rauf and Xavier Bartlett picked up two wickets each.
Chasing 199, Unicorns captain Matthew Short rained down a fiery 29-ball 61, while his opening partner Finn Allen clattered 78 runs off just 35 balls as the duo shared 117 runs for the first wicket in less than nine overs. Despite their dismissals to Daryl Mitchell and Adam Milne, the Unicorns romped to an easy seven-wicket win in just 16.1 overs.
SL Hold On To A Draw After Shanto Ton, Taijul Scare
Sri Lanka batted out the final 32 overs on Day 5 of the first Test to secure a draw at the Galle International Stadium. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto notched up his seventh Test century, and his second of the match, to extend his team’s second innings total from 177-3 to 285-6d.
Setting up Sri Lanka with a 296-run target, Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam picked up three quick wickets, including that of outbound Sri Lankan legend Angelo Mathews, to claim figures of 3-23. However, Kamindu Mendis and captain Dhananjaya de Silva survived the final nine overs of the day to set up a series decider in Colombo next week.
