Test cricket often throws up curious statistical anomalies, none more intriguing than innings featuring multiple centuries without culminating in a record team total. These uncommon scorecards showcase how moments of individual brilliance can coexist with collective underachievement, producing totals that feel oddly modest despite hosting as many as three three-figure milestones.

Following India’s batting effort in Leeds, here is a look at three of the lowest team totals in Test cricket featuring three individual centuries.

4. West Indies 497 vs India, Kolkata 2002

West Indies mounted 497 in the first innings of the series-deciding third Test against hosts India at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata back in October and November 2002. After India aggregated 358 runs with just one half-century, West Indies took a 139-run first innings lead courtesy of centuries from three of their batters, and a calculated 88 from then youngster Chris Gayle.

Opening batter Wavell Hinds started off with 100 runs from 200 balls, while left-handed batter Shivnarine Chanderpaul top-scored in the innings with 140 runs off 258 deliveries in the middle order. Marlon Samuels also tonked 18 elegant boundaries in his 182-ball knock of 104 runs. Nonetheless, the match ended as a draw, with India taking the series 2-0.

3. Australia 494 vs England, Headingley 1926

In the third Test of the 1926 Ashes series in England, a Warren Bardsley-led Australian team made 494 from 165 overs in the first innings at Headingley. While captain Bardsley was dismissed for a first-ball duck, his opening partner Bill Woodfull and number three Charles Macartney both racked up majestic hundreds and shared a 235-run partnership for the second wicket.

Arthur Richardson at number five also carved 100 runs with 10 boundaries, while no other batter in the entire Australian line-up managed to procure a half-century in the innings. The match turned out to be a high-scoring draw, with Ashes remaining steady at 0-0 after three matches.

2. South Africa 475 vs England, Centurion 2016

Hosts South Africa started off the fourth Test against England at Centurion in January 2016 with 475 runs in the first innings from 132 overs. Opener Stephen Cook and number three Hashim Amla conjured cunnings hundreds during their monumental second-wicket partnership to take South Africa past the 200-run mark.

Wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock also clattered an explosive 129* off just 128 balls with 17 fours and two huge sixes to provide a late push to the Proteas. Glittered with three tons and no half-centuries, South Africa’s first innings gig paved way for a huge 280-run win for the hosts to salvage some pride against the Englishmen after series defeat.

1. India 471 vs England, Headingley 2025

In an innings featuring three ducks, two ones, an unbeaten three and an 11; Team India still managed to stand tall against hosts England with 471 first innings runs at Headingley in Leeds in June 2025. Opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal started off with a splendid 101 from 159 balls on Day 1 alongside captain and number four Shubman Gill (147 off 227 balls).

Blistering wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant further piled on England’s pain with a burgeoning 134 from 178 with 12 fours and six sixes. KL Rahul also chipped in with a cunning 42 to see off the opening hour threat as India consumed 113 overs up until the post-lunch break on Day 2.
