Another edition of the Women’s Big Bash League is coming up later this year and the excitement is already high. Ahead of stepping into the upcoming season, the Southern Brave Women has welcomed a new member.

In a significant development, Australia’s Luke Williams has been appointed as Southern Brave Women’s head coach for WBBL 2025, succeeding Charlotte Edwards.

Luke Williams Takes Up New Role

After women franchise leagues become popularized in the cricket world, the Women’s Big Bash League has created legacy. As the 11th season is coming up later this year, the Southern Brave Women take a massive step. They have appointed Luke Williams as their head coach.

After their former head coach Charlotte Edwards moved away from the team after becoming the head coach of the England Women’s side, Williams took over the role. Ending Edwards’ legacy, that has marked a new chapter of Brave’s history in the WBBL.

A Glance At Williams’ Impressive Coaching Career

Luke Williams is already holding an impressive record as coach. As Edwards’ deputy he enjoyed success as Brave secured their maiden title in 2023. Adding to this, he was also the coach of the Adelaide Strikers secured trophies consecutively in 2022 and 2023.

He also enjoyed success in Asian conditions. After joining the Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women in 2023 replacing Ben Sawyer, he guided the franchise to their maiden IPL trophy triumph in 2024. That has become another milestone in his coaching era.

Williams Shares His Thoughts After Taking The Helm

After stepping into the top role, Luke Williams opened up about the moment, calling it a “privilege” to take over from Edwards. As quoted by the ESPNcricinfo, ahead of stepping in the new role, he set his eyes on the coveted trophy.

“It's a privilege to take charge of Southern Brave this year from Charlotte Edwards. Having worked with the team since for a number of years, we have an excellent group of players and staff and recruited well in the draft earlier this year, so hopefully we can get back to Finals Day and lift the trophy this summer,” he said.

After the WBBL 2025 draft, Southern Brave has named a mighty squad. With fresh faces and a new head coach at the helm, they’re all set to make a strong push for the coveted title this season.
