India’s fast bowling sensation Jasprit Bumrah recently shared a funny incident involving his wife Sanjana Ganesan. The ace pacer shared how she missed his first-ever five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
Appearing on the YouTube show Who’s The Boss?, hosted by former cricketer Harbhajan Singh and his wife Geeta Basra, Bumrah took fans back to the 2018 South Africa tour, where he made his Test debut. After a challenging outing in the previous match, Bumrah bounced back in the third Test at Johannesburg, playing a crucial role in India's win with a five-wicket haul.
Recalling the memory, Jasprit Bumrah said he was looking forward to celebrating the moment with Sanjana, who was present at the stadium. However, she was nowhere to be seen when he turned to make a special gesture after claiming his fifth wicket.
“My previous match had not gone well, so I thought, no problem, the next match will go well. And she was there, and I took five wickets. When I turned around, humara banda hi nahi khada hai udhar. Chai-samosa kha raha hai,” Bumrah joked, suggesting Sanjana may have left the stands for a snack break.
He added, “I thought that after taking five wickets, I would also make a little gesture—maybe wave or something. But madam was busy eating inside.”
In response, Sanjana offered her side of the story and cleared the air with a smile. She explained that her brief absence from the stands was not for snacks, but to get a better view of the celebrations on the television screens inside the stadium.
“This story is not true. I wear spectacles but usually don’t wear them in public, so I can’t see clearly from afar,” Sanjana said. “I had gone inside to watch it on the TV screens because you get to see their facial expressions clearly and all the celebrations. I went inside momentarily—and by then he had already taken five wickets.”
Love Story That Started In Covid's Bio-Bubbles
The episode also revealed charming details about how their love story unfolded, especially during the restrictive days of bio-bubble cricket during the pandemic. Bumrah shared that after much attempt, he decided to take their relationship to the next level and began planning a proposal.
Knowing the challenges of movement between bio-secure bubbles, Bumrah arranged for a bubble-to-bubble transfer to ensure he could meet Sanjana safely. He went on to set the stage for a heartfelt proposal. The couple eventually tied the knot in March 2021 in a private ceremony in Goa.
