After showcasing exceptional batting brilliance, Team India faced a heartbreaking defeat in the first Test match against England. Among other centuries in the clash, KL Rahul’s gritty ton was the iconic one.
As Shubman Gill and Co. prepare for the second Test, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar urges KL Rahul to build on his current form and keep the runs flowing throughout the series.
Manjrekar Calls For More 'Rahul Magic' In The Series
Coming as an opener in the ongoing Test series, KL Rahul turned heads after heroics in the first Test match. After falling just short of a fifty in the first innings, the wicketkeeper-batter bounced back in style with a stunning century in the second innings. As India’s top order faced some blows, Rahul stood tall and played a knock of 137 runs in 247 deliveries with 18 boundaries.
As they are set to head to the second Test, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar urges more heroics from Rahul. Speaking on a show called ‘Game Plan’, as quoted by Sportskeeda, Manjrekar said, Rahul can’t be a ‘one-match wonder’ as the world is match-defining performances from the batter through the rest of the series.
“I see Pant carrying his form, but there is another senior batter in the team, who now has got no choice but to carry his form right through the series. Indian cricket needs him badly, and KL Rahul cannot be a one-hundred wonder or a one-Test-match performer,” he said.
Can Pant Keep The Magic Going?
Even though India faced a heartbreaking defeat in the first Test, Rishabh Pant’s batting was a treat to watch. With twin hundreds in both innings, Pant overtook MS Dhoni’s record of six centuries to become the Indian wicketkeeper with the highest number of Test tons. Sanjay Manjrekar’s confident nod when asked if Pant can keep the momentum going has turned heads.
“I think he will because it seems like he enjoys batting in Test cricket. Any batter who gets two hundreds in a Test match, it takes a lot out of you mentally, not so much physically, getting a hundred in the first innings, and 48 hours later, you have the same kind of reserve to get another hundred. So that is a hallmark of an exceptional player,” he said.
With a 1-0 lead in the ongoing Test series, England is ready to take on India in the second Test at Birmingham on July 2. Fans are expecting another thrilling showdown.
