After facing an India Test snub from the ongoing Test series against England, batter Shreyas Iyer was also axed from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy 2024 squad for their upcoming encounter against Assam.

This comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) whip over younger players to feature in Ranji to become eligible for Test call-up. Iyer, who featured in the first two Tests against England failed to impress with poor outings and found himself out of contention for the remainder of the series.

Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) have announced their 16-man squad for the Elite Group B match against the northeastern state, which starts on February 16. All-rounder Shivam Dube makes a return to the Mumbai squad, with Ajinkya Rahane leading the 41-time Ranji champions.

Several reports suggested that Iyer complained of back spasms after the Visakhapatnam Test, however, the BCCI did not clarify the reason behind not naming the 29-year-old in the remaining matches against England.

Iyer in 14 Tests, has scored 811 runs with one hundred and five fifties, which well below his reputation in First-Class (FC) cricket, where the cricketer in 70 matches has amassed 5,559 runs with 12 hundred and 29 half-centuries.

With 30 points from six matches, including four wins, one loss and a solitary loss, Mumbai top the Elite Group B standings, which include teams likes Andhra, Bihar, Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh.
