Shreyas Iyer Ruled Out; Likely To Miss Entire Remainder Of IND-ENG Tests

In a major development, it has been learned that India's prolific middle-order batter, Shreyas Iyer, is set to miss the remaining Test matches between India and England. The 29-year-old, who has had problems with his back, will be unavailable due to stiff back & groin pain.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to announce the Test squad for the remaining three matches, and Iyer's absence could haunt India in the remainder of the series.

As reported by Indian Express, the Mumbai-based batter is in the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru, for better rehabilitation. The Indian No.5 is expected to miss the remaining three Test matches but will recover on time for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) to lead Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

"Shreyas Iyer has informed the Indian team management and the medical staff that his back gets stiff after playing more than 30 balls and he feels pain in his groin while playing forward defence," a BCCI source told Indian Express.

The Indian camp is currently facing a problem of plenty in terms of injuries and unavailability, as KL Rahul and Ravindra missed the Visakhapatnam Test, and Mohammed Shami - who carried a long-standing injury during the World Cup - will most probably be next seen in action during the IPL 2024 itself.

Meanwhile, there is no formal announcement about the former Indian captain Virat Kohli's return after he pulled out, citing personal reasons.

It is understood if Shreyas Iyer and Kohli miss out, the BCCI will stick around with Rajat Patidar and Sarfaraz Khan in the ongoing series. And if that happens, the onus of the Indian batting will be on captain Rohit Sharma, alongside youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill.
