The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to impose a complete ban on Pakistan teams from taking part in future World Championship of Legends (WCL) tournaments. This decision comes after a recent controversy that left the PCB feeling embarrassed.
The trouble started when Indian players refused to play against the Pakistan Legends team during the second edition of the WCL. Because of this, the tournament organisers gave the match points to India, even though they chose not to play.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Expresses Disappointment
As a result, the PCB felt that the organisers acted unfairly and were biased. During a virtual meeting of the PCB’s Board of Governors, led by Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, the board expressed strong disappointment over how the WCL handled the situation.
"The cancellation was not based on cricketing merit but on appeasing a specific nationalistic narrative," the PCB said in a statement as quoted by ESPN.
"However, we cannot allow our players to be part of events where the spirit of the game is overshadowed by skewed politics that undermines the very essence of sportsmanship and the gentleman's game."
Many top PCB officials took part in the meeting, including Sumair Ahmed Syed, Salman Naseer, and former cricket legend Zaheer Abbas, along with other board members.
For those who may not know, the WCL is a T20 cricket tournament held every year in England. It features retired and non-contracted players from major cricket nations like India, Pakistan, England, Australia, South Africa, and the West Indies. The tournament is co-owned by Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn and Harshit Tomar.
Before the semi-final match, well-known Indian players like Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, and Harbhajan Singh refused to play in a group stage match against Pakistan. They said their decision was due to rising political tensions between the two countries, especially following the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s military response, known as Operation Sindoor.
South Africa Clinch Their First WCL Trophy
Because India didn’t play in the semi-final, Pakistan moved ahead to the final automatically. However, they lost the final match to South Africa by nine wickets, giving South Africa their first WCL title.
In response to all this, the PCB has now imposed a full ban on future participation in the WCL, saying the tournament’s handling of the situation was unfair and biased
