Akash Deep, a name most fans associate with fast bowling, stunned everyone with the bat on Day 3 of the fifth Test against England at The Oval. Walking in as a nightwatchman, the seamer turned into an unlikely hero by smashing a fearless 66 off 94 balls, and Aakash Chopra took the opportunity to shut down critics.

In the final session of Day 2, India lost openers KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan cheaply and decided to send fast bowler Akash Deep as a night watchman to play out the day and save important wickets.

Deep fulfilled his responsibility and stayed unbeaten at the end of the day’s play. On Day 3, however, the tail-ender was in a mood to have some fun with the bat.

Aakash Chopra Rates Akash Deep’s Batting Skills Highly

Indian seamer Akash Deep outperformed Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first session of Day 3 to hit a whirlwind knock. He hit the ball cleanly, finding the boundary 12 times.  In no time, Deep brought up his maiden Test fifty before Jamie Overton dismissed him on 66 off 94 balls.

Meanwhile, in his latest YouTube video, former cricketer Aakash Chopra reminded everyone of those critics who questioned Deep's nightwatchman choice and praised the seamer’s bravery and skill.

"He was not a nightwatchman. He came as a very important man. I remember some keyboard warriors and mediapersons were asking why KL Rahul gave Akash Deep the strike, and you were thinking that he did the job he came for. Akash Deep was sent. He is no mug with the bat," Chopra said.

Deep’s confidence was visible, not just in his strokes, but in his attitude too. After one particularly good shot, he stood tall and posed like a star, leading Chopra to joke.

"You try to send someone who can bat a little, and how well he batted. He scored a half-century, went above 60, and the way he stood after playing some shots in the end, tu kheech meri photo (you click my photo), one got a feeling like that. Akash Deep batted extremely well and scored runs," he added.

Akash Deep’s innings came at a vital time as India was looking to stretch their lead and put pressure on England. Thanks to his knock, the hosts were set a challenging target of 374.

Josh Tongue Admits Frustration After Akash Deep’s Knock

India’s surprise hero Akash Deep stole the spotlight on Day 3 of the final Test at The Oval, smashing a stunning 66 off just 94 balls. England quick Josh Tongue admitted it was obviously frustrating to watch a tail-ender thrive. With this maiden fifty, Deep joined legends like Tendulkar, Kohli, and Gill as the only Indians to score a Test fifty at No. 4 in England this century. He also became the 12th player to bag a 10-wicket match haul and a fifty on an England tour.
