MS Dhoni, the legendary former captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), recently spoke about the team’s disappointing performance in the 2025 IPL season. He admitted that things didn’t go well, but also shared hope for a better future.

This season, CSK had a tough time and ended up at the bottom of the points table, winning just 4 out of 14 matches. Ruturaj Gaikwad, the regular captain, got injured early in the tournament and fractured his arm. Because of that, Dhoni had to step in and lead the team in 9 matches.

MS Dhoni Reflects On CSK’s IPL 2025 Season

Speaking at the launch of Maxvision Eye Super Speciality hospital in Chennai, Dhoni said the team had some weaknesses, especially in the batting lineup, but they worked hard to fix them. He said,

“There were certain holes that we needed to plug. We were slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. So, it looks like we are quite sorted.”

Ruturaj, who hasn’t played since April 8 against Punjab Kings, had earlier signed up to play in England for Yorkshire but backed out due to personal reasons. However, he’s now set to play in the Duleep Trophy for the West Zone team later this month.

Although CSK hasn’t reached the playoffs in the last two seasons, Dhoni pointed out that the team has always been good at spotting its mistakes and trying to improve. He mentioned that there’s a small auction coming up in December, and the team will look to fill the remaining gaps.

“I feel more often than not, we have been able to figure out what exactly went wrong. A small auction is coming in December, some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those,” he added.

As for Dhoni’s own future in cricket, he didn’t give a clear answer. He jokingly said,

“I just got a tick mark that I can play cricket for the next five years. But the catch is that I have been given clearance only for eyesight. I need clearance for my body as well. I cannot play cricket just with my eyes alone.”

Notably, this was the first time CSK finished last in the IPL. But with plans to rebuild the squad and players like Gaikwad returning, the team is hopeful for a strong comeback in the next season.
