Hardik Pandya is set to continue as the captain of the Mumbai Indians franchise for the IPL 2025 season. The dashing Indian all-rounder was appointed as Mumbai Indians captain earlier this year for IPL 2024, replacing decade-long skipper and five-time winner Rohit Sharma in the process.

Both Pandya and Sharma were among the five primary retentions made by the Mumbai Indians franchise on October 31, i.e., mere weeks prior to the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Hardik Pandya to continue as captain

Hardik Pandya was reacquired by Mumbai Indians franchise back in late-2023 following his two-year stint with Gujarat Titans. Moreover, the all-rounder was also appointed as team captain for the IPL 2024 season at the expense of Rohit Sharma.


As it turned out, Pandya’s ascension to captaincy was met with severe criticism from fans of the franchise. The dashing all-rounder was even booed by crowds across nearly all IPL 2024 venues, primarily at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Under his leadership, the Mumbai Indians franchise also finished at the bottom of the IPL 2024 points table, securing just four wins and coping 10 defeats from 14 league fixtures.

On October 31, both Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma were among the five primary retentions made by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Apart from the two cricketers, the franchise also retained senior fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, T20 batting superstar Suryakumar Yadav and rising star Tilak Varma.

It remains to be seen what decisions the Mumbai Indians management will be taking at the IPL 2025 mega auction later this year. With an available purse of Rs.45 crores, the franchise might well rope in fresh faces at the auction event in a bid to further enhance their squad composition.
