Former Indian cricketer and politician, Kirti Azad is facing severe criticism after posting a photo of his wife Poonam Azad’s funeral pyre on social media. Poonam, who passed away at the age of 59 after a prolonged illness, was a political figure who had been associated with several political parties, including the BJP, Aam Aadmi Party, and Congress.

Her death marked a personal loss for Kirti Azad, but his decision to share the funeral pyre image publicly has sparked outrage.

Kirti Azad clinched the Bardhaman-Durgapur seat in a landmark victory

Meanwhile, Azad recently celebrated a significant political achievement. The former cricketer, who was part of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, secured a seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Representing the Bardhaman-Durgapur constituency under the Trinamool Congress banner, Azad defeated BJP heavyweight Dilip Ghosh, and this was seen as a major win for the party in Bengal.
