On Monday, July 22, India's new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, addressed the press, where he talked about his future plans and the current scenario within Indian cricket.

The former India opener also talked about the importance of all formats and mentioned Mohammed Shami as he remains a key player for India despite being out of action for a long time.

After the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, the focus would shift to Test cricket, as India have key WTC Test games against Bangladesh and then the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

Mohammed Shami's comeback series confirmed

The fans are worried over Shami's return to the playing XI, as the right-arm seamer has not played a single game for the Men in Blue since the 2023 World Cup final as he is recovering from his heel injury.

In a recent presser, the chief selector Ajit Agarkar provided an update on Shami's return and stated that they would hope for the GT star to return for the Bangladesh Test series in September.

“We more or less know who the guys are, there are some injuries at the moment and hope they will be back up. Shami has started to bowl which is a god sign. September 19 is the first Test and that was always the goal. I don't know if that is his timeline for recovery, will have to ask the guys at the NCA about that. There are so many Tests coming. We will need some depth. Bumrah, Shami, and Siraj have been around for a while, these are the obvious ones. But there will be some conversation around it. Got a lot of first-class cricket coming up so we can build guys up like that.”

Recently, a video went viral on the internet, where Shami resumed practice at his residence and was bowling in the nets.

Notably, Bangladesh will travel to India for two-Test match series starting on September 19.
