A new era of Indian cricket is about to begin from the Sri Lanka tour under the guidance of Gautam Gambhir. The Men in Blue will tour the Island Nation for a multi-format series starting on July 27.

Ahead of the series, Gambhir held his first presser as India's head coach and was joined by chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The two were directed with heavy questions ranging from Virat- Rohit's future, suspense over support staff, and also the captaincy saga around Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya.

Agarkar on Gill's future as captain

Notably, Hardik, who was India's vice-captain in the T20 World Cup 2024, is now replaced by Shubman Gill, while the captain's role has been handed to Suryakumar Yadav.

While Agarkar commented on SKY becoming the captain, he also praised Shubman Gill and hinted that the board would look at the right-hand batter to lead India across all three formats in the future.

"Shubman Gill is the guy we feel is a three-format player. He has shown a lot more qualities over the last year or so. That's what we hear from the dressing room. He has shown some decent leadership qualities. We want to try and give him the experience. Though there are no guarantees."

The first example of BCCI trying to groom Gill as future captain was seen recently, when they appointed him as the captain for the Zimbabwe tour. In the recently concluded tour, India won the series 4-1.
