Mohammad Shami had been dealing with his ongoing heel injury even during the ICC World Cup 2023 in October-November and required injections to overcome pain whilst he bowled for India at the quadrennial event, stated a report in the PTI.

According to a source privy to the details, the experienced pacer has been nursing the injury ever since he entered deep into India's campaign and, therefore, failed the fitness test required to be approved to travel to South Africa for the ongoing Test series.

With the World Cup dream playing the major motivation force, Shami ran in spiritedly for the month and a half and took 24 wickets in just seven outings, even as he was battling a hard time with his heel at the sidelines before matches.

Shami Battling Chronic Heel Issue Since World Cup

"Shami has a chronic left heel issue. A lot of people don't know that he took injections regularly during World Cup and played the entire tournament through pain," a former Bengal teammate told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"But you must understand that as you grow older, recovery from each niggle or big injury takes that more time," he added.

Shami was a massive miss in the opening Test in Centurion, where South Africa closed out an embarrassing defeat for India within three days.

The pacer's absence put extra pressure on both his pace partners, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, as well as debutant Prasidh Krishna, who was taken for 93 for one off his 20 overs.

A former India bowler was critical of the team management and selectors for taking Prasidh to the Test tour of South Africa with insignificant first-class experience behind him as the pacer played only his 13th red-ball game in Centurion.

"Poor Prasidh. The kid isn't ready for Test cricket. He doesn't have skills to bowl second and third spells yet. They went with him based on his ability to hit the deck. But they forgot when has he last played a proper season of Ranji Trophy? Just one India A game isn't enough," the ex-cricketer told PTI.
