Players who retired before turning 30 [Source: @CricCrazyJohns/x.com]
On Tuesday, West Indian cricketer, Nicholas Pooran made a shocking retirement announcement as he decided to hang up his boots from international cricket. The announcement was surprising since the maverick batter was a key player for the Windies in white-ball cricket and was set to be their main player in T20 World Cup next year.
However, the explosive batter decided not to continue playing for his nation and perhaps he is focusing on franchise cricket as the West Indian players are generally in demand for T20 cricket across the globe. He is currently 29 years old and generally cricketers tend to retire when they reach their late 30s.
List of players who retired before turning 30
Here is a list of cricketers who retired before turning 30, and surprisingly there is no Indian on the list.
Players | Age |
Nicholas Pooran | 29 |
Will Pucovski | 27 |
Craig Kieswetter | 27 |
James Taylor | 26 |
- Pooran's retirement was not due to any injury or illness and the batter was also at the peak of his powers. However, as per reports, the West Indian players get way more salary playing in franchise cricket as compared to representing their nation and this was a possible reason for his sudden retirement announcement.
- Pucovski was a promising Australian cricketer who also represented his nation in Test cricket. However, his career was derailed due to repeated concussions. In total he had 13 concussions and the batter retired due to health concern and safety reasons.
- Kieswetter played a key role in England's first T20 World Cup title in 2010. At that time he was one of England's brightest prospects, however, an eye injury in 2014 jeopardised his career. The batter did make a comeback in 2015, but his vision issues persisted and he had to retire.
- Another Englishman on the list, James Taylor was touted to be England's future in 2015. However, in 2016 he was diagnosed with a heart issue (ARVC) and it forced him to retire from Cricket at the age of 26.
