In a surprising move, West Indies star batter Nicholas Pooran has announced that he’s retiring from international cricket. The news shocked cricket fans around the world, especially since Pooran is just 29 years old. He was one of the West Indies' most experienced players in T20 internationals and also their highest run-scorer in that format.
Despite this, he has decided to step away from playing for the national side, although he will continue playing in T20 leagues around the world.
In his farewell message, the-29-year-old shared how much the game has meant to him:
"This game we love has given and will continue to give so much - joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies. Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field... it's hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.
"Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies cricket will never fade. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and strength for the road ahead."
It is imporant to note that Cricket West Indies confirmed Pooran’s retirement and appreciated his contribution to Caribbean cricket.
A Look Back At Pooran’s International Career
His international journey began in 2016 when he made his debut in T20Is, and three years later, he played his first ODI. In the 50-over format, Pooran played 61 matches and scored 1,983 runs with an impressive average of 39.66. He smashed three centuries and eleven fifties during this time. But it was T20 cricket where he truly shined. Pooran scored 2,275 runs in 97 innings with a strike rate of 136.39 and crossed the fifty-run mark thirteen times.
Pooran was also given the responsibility of leading the WI team, but his captaincy stint wasn’t very successful. Under his leadership, the team managed to win only 8 out of 30 matches across ODIs and T20Is.
His last ODI appearance for the WI was in July 2023, and he played his most recent T20I in December 2024. With just eight months left before the next T20 World Cup, Pooran’s sudden retirement has left a big hole in the Windies' middle order, a position that will now need a solid replacement.
