West Indies batting sensation Nicholas Pooran was at his brutal best against Afghanistan in the last Group C match of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, smashing 98 off 53 deliveries. His innings, laced with eight sixes and six fours, broke several records.

One of the most notable was breaking Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes by a West Indies batter in T20Is. By hitting eight sixes, Pooran surpassed Gayle’s tally of 124.

Pooran achieved the highest individual score of the ongoing T20 World Cup, surpassing the previous record of 94 not out set by USA's Aaron Jones against Canada.

This innings marked Pooran’s personal best in T20ls, surpassing his previous high score of 82. During his explosive knock, he also reached the milestone of 2000 runs in T20I cricket.

Additionally, Pooran became the sixth player in T20 cricket history to hit over 500 sixes. Remarkably, the southpaw scored 36 runs in a single over against Afghanistan's Azmatullah Omarzai, making it only the second time such a feat has occurred in T20 World Cup history, following Yuvraj Singh’s six consecutive sixes off Stuart Broad in 2007.

Coming in at number three after Brandon King's early dismissal, Pooran quickly established a strong partnership with Johnson Charles, adding 80 runs swiftly. He then formed a 64-run stand with Rovman Powell. Pooran's powerful innings helped propel the West Indies to a total of 218/5, the highest score of the tournament so far.
