The ex-India cricketer who recently won the Indian Premier League Cricket (IPL) title as a mentor with Kolkata Knight Riders, Gautam Gambhir is set to be interviewed by the Cricket Advisory Committee of BCCI to decide whether he will be coaching the Indian team or not.

Gambhir who will be interviewed on Tuesday, June 18, is the only candidate who has applied for the vacancy that Rahul Dravid will be creating at the end of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup. The BCCI had invited applications earlier in the summer with a deadline of May 27.

Following will be the requirements from the new head coach of the Team India:

  1. The candidate “must be willing to meet work expectations and pressures associated with handling marquee athletes.”
  2. They should help in “developing a world-class Indian cricket team which delivers sustained success in all conditions and formats, inspiring current and future generations of cricketers and stakeholders with their approach to the game.”

The CAC consisting of Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe, and Sulakshana Naik will also be conducting interviews for the selector's job to replace Salil Ankola who is about to finish his tenure.

Dravid who signed an extension at the end of Cricket World Cup 2023 was allowed to re-apply for the job and give the interview, however, the coach opted out from doing the same, making it clear that he will be coaching the team for the last few games in the West Indies.

Under Dravid's reign as the head coach, India made it to the semi-final of the T20 World Cup in 2022 followed by two finals in 2023 i.e., the World Test Championship and the Cricket World Cup that India lost to Australia. On the other hand, Gambhir, apart from the glory with KKR has previously worked as a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants as well.

The new head coach is expected to get a long contract which will run until the end of 2027.
