Kane Williamson Unsure Of T20I Future After Team's Disastrous Show In T20 WC

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said that his team would require some time to regroup after their disappointing group stage exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA. However, the 33-year-old, soon to be 34, could not confirm about his own T20I future for the 2026 edition of the tournament in India and Sri Lanka.

Williamson’s long-time teammate and senior fast bowler Trent Boult had already marked the 2024 T20 World Cup as his final appearance at the format’s premier event, and he celebrated the occasion by picking up match-winning figures of 2-14 against PNG.


Kane Williamson unsure of T20I future

Kane Williamson, a veteran of 93 T20I matches, led New Zealand into the finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE.

Following his team’s crashing first-round exit from the 2024 event in the West Indies and USA, the legendary batter could not confirm about his T20I future when he was asked if he would be involved in New Zealand’s setup for the 2026 edition in India and Sri Lanka.

Williamson said:

“Oh, I don't know. There's a bit of time between now and then, so it's about regrouping as a side.”

Under the leadership of Kane Williamson, the New Zealand cricket team sustained demoralising losses to Afghanistan and West Indies in their opening two games of the 2024 T20 World Cup. 

Their wins over Uganda and PNG in the subsequent two matches made little-to-no difference as they were already knocked out of the competition’s Super Eight race at the time.

Among Kane Williamson’s upcoming ventures, the cricketer is lined up for a Test tour of India later this year, before hosting England for a three-match series in December.
