The mega auction for IPL 2025 is just around the corner, and the buzz around the retention list of different franchises has caught the attention of cricket fans around the world. The franchises are allowed to retain six players this time around which should include at least one uncapped player. The franchises can retain the players before the mega auction or through RTM and it has added to the excitement of the upcoming auction.

Also, the RTM rule comes with a twist this time, with the highest bidder given an extra opportunity to increase the price if the original franchise uses the RTM card. The move is expected to benefit players and now Sportstar has confirmed that the IPL authorities have decided to change the previous practice of reducing the 'lesser amount' if a player's retention price exceeds the designated price for the slot.

Franchises Need To Be More Careful With Top Retentions

During the 2025 mega auction, if the price of a player is equal to or higher than the designated amount, the higher of the two amounts will be deducted from the purse. For example, SRH is set to retain Heinrich Klaasen for Rs 23 Crore, Pat Cummins for 18 Crore and Abhishek Sharma for 14 Crore. Now, according to the rules, the first retention should get 18 Crore while the next two will get 14 and 11 Crore respectively. So, ideally it would cost franchise 43 Crore, but since they have agreed to give more money to Heinrich Klaasen, their total will come down to 55 Crore which would now be reduced from their auction purse of 120 Crore.

According to the earlier rule, only 43 Crore would have been deducted. During mega auction for IPL 2022, Virat Kohli was given 17 Crore, two more than the highest price band of 15 Crore in that auction. However, despite the higher amount to a player, only 15 Crore were reduced from the franchise's account.

The final date to submit the retention list is October 31st and the auction is likely to take place on November 24 and 25 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
