Shreyas Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title win in the 2024 IPL, and there were hopes that he would be the franchise's top retention ahead of the mega auction. However, according to a report from TOI, the franchise is not likely to make him the top retention, and Andre Russell is the front-runner to take that spot.
Shreyas Iyer was bought for 12.25 Crore at the 2022 mega auction and played two seasons for KKR as he missed the 2023 edition due to injury. He has been inspirational as a leader, but KKR have lot of quality options at their disposal in the form of Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy and KKR currently seem to be weighing their options ahead of mega auction.
Shreyas Iyer Might Look At Other Options Ahead Of Mega Auction
Shreyas Iyer did well as a leader in IPL 2024, but as a batter, there were other players who did better than him and that has created doubt in franchise's mind. Russell did brilliantly in the last season and given his stature in world cricket, he might be the first one to be retained which means that Shreyas Iyer would have to be content with the number two or number three position.
However, Shreyas Iyer brings leadership skills to the table and might fetch a higher price in the auction as franchises like RCB and Punjab Kings, who are currently searching for a leader, could consider him as their captaincy option. So, Iyer's future as KKR's captain and as a player looks uncertain now, and the franchise might go for a full reset in their leadership group as they have already lost three key members of their coaching staff, including Gautam Gambhir, after the triumph in the previous edition.
