More Trouble For Ishan, Shreyas & Hardik As BCCI To Boost Test Match Fees After IPL 2024 - Reports

In a significant move to encourage players to embrace the longest format of cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to increase Test match fees alongside introducing additional bonuses for those participating in all Test series within a calendar year.

This decision aims to counter the growing disinterest among players in red-ball cricket, highlighted by the recent choices of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, who opted out of domestic cricket to focus on the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 preparations.

Currently, cricketers are compensated with ₹15 lakh per Test, ₹6 lakh for each One Day International (ODI), and ₹3 lakh for T20 Internationals. However, the Indian Express reports that the BCCI plans a significant overhaul in the pay structure for Tests after the conclusion of IPL 2024. Additionally, to further incentivize players, those who participate in all of the country's Test series over a year will receive a bonus, adding to their central contract fees.

This strategy comes in the wake of concerns over players sidelining Test cricket for lucrative T20 leagues like the IPL. Notably, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has been vocal about the importance of centrally contracted players participating in domestic formats like the Ranji Trophy, emphasizing the value of red-ball cricket.

The implementation of these changes is expected to take place after IPL 2024. With Team India engaged in the 2023-25 World Test Championship, facing series against Sri Lanka, and New Zealand, and a challenging tour in Australia, these changes are timely.
