New Zealand's celebrated left-arm fast bowler, Neil Wagner, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 37.

His retirement comes following his omission from the New Zealand Test squad for the upcoming series against Australia. Wagner's retirement marks the end of a distinguished career that saw him become the fifth-highest wicket-taker for New Zealand in Tests.

During a heartfelt press conference at Basin Reserve in Wellington, Wagner shared his feelings, saying,

"It's been an emotional week. It's not easy to step away from something you've given so much to and got so much out of, but it's now time for others to step up and take this team forward."

He left the Black Caps after a legendary 12-year career that was capped off by a crucial part in the team's first-ever World Test Championship victory.

Wagner's career is notable for his tenacity, particularly in delivering long spells and employing a potent bouncer strategy that troubled many top batters, including Steve Smith. He added,

"I've enjoyed every single moment of playing Test cricket for the Black Caps and am proud of everything we've been able to achieve as a team," highlighting the close relationships and friendships he had made throughout his career.

His last appearance came in the Hamilton Test against South Africa on February 16, 2024, rounding off a remarkable journey that began on July 25, 2012, against the West Indies. Wagner's stats of 260 wickets at an average of 27.57 from 64 Tests speak volumes about his contribution to New Zealand cricket.

In his farewell, Wagner didn't forget to acknowledge the support from his family, especially his wife Lana, for her significant role in his life and career. He looks forward to contributing to the team's success in any way possible during his final week in camp.
