Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Thursday, May 22.
Mitchell Marsh’s Ton Headlines LSG’s Consolation Win
LSG defeated table-toppers Gujarat Titans by 33 runs in match 64 of the IPL 2025 season in Ahmedabad. Batting first, Mitchell Marsh plundered 117 runs from 64 balls while Nicholas Pooran smeared a cracking 27-ball 56* as LSG mounted 235-2 off 20 overs.
In response, the Titans conjured 202-9 from 20 overs despite featuring a sizzling 29-ball 57 from Shahrukh Khan. Will O’Rourke secured sensational figures of 3-27, with Avesh Khan and Ayush Badoni also chipping in with two wickets each. The outcome marked LSG’s first win after four successive defeats, but did little-to-no damage to Titans’ playoffs ambitions.
Crawley, Duckett, Pope Centuries Sets ENG Up For Big Day
England amassed 498-3 from 88 overs at the end of the opening day of the one-off four-day Test against Zimbabwe in Nottingham. Opening batters Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett both plundered majestic centuries, and shared 231 runs for the first wicket in just 41.3 overs. Duckett blasted 20 fours and two sixes in his 134-ball 140, while Crawley composed an elegant 124 from 171 balls with 14 boundaries.
Ollie Pope at number three top-scored in the day by belting 169* runs from just 163 balls. He will resume England’s first innings on Day 2 alongside Harry Brook (9* off 18).
Joe Root Becomes Fastest To 13,000 Test Runs
Former English captain Joe Root made a quick 44-ball 34 against Zimbabwe on Day 1 of the opening Test before falling to lanky Zimbabwe paceman Blessing Muzarabani. Through the course of his short-lived innings, Root became the fastest cricketer in Test history to complete 13,000 runs (153 matches), going past the likes of Jacques Kallis and Sachin Tendulkar.
Root’s current Test tally stands at 13,006 runs from 279 innings at a splendid average of 50.80, glittering his career with 36 tons and 65 half-centuries.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz Replaces Soumya Sarkar In PAK Tour
Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has replaced injured Soumya Sarkar for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Pakistan. Miraz last played a T20I match for Bangladesh back in December last year. Since then, he was excluded from Bangladesh’s recently-concluded three-match T20I series in the UAE.
With Soumya Sarkar recovering from his back injury, the 27-year-old will be expected to join his national colleagues next week ahead of the series-opener against Pakistan at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.
RCB Rope In Tim Seifert In Place Of Jacob Bethell
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise has roped in New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert as a replacement for outbound Jacob Bethell for the IPL 2025 playoffs.
