On Thursday, May 22, Lucknow Super Giants locked horns against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The visitors were the better team as the Rishabh Pant-led side beat GT by 33 runs. It is worth noting that it was a dead rubber match as Gujarat have already qualified for the playoffs, but a defeat would hurt the Shubman Gill-led side as it dents their chances to stay in top 2 of the points table. 

At present, GT are still on top of the table with 18 points in 13 matches and have a game left against Chennai Super Kings. However, their defeat is a positive sign for other teams and in particular Mumbai Indians and this article will explain why. 

Why GT's Defeat Is Good For MI?

In the race to finish in top 2, GT are at top with 18 points, while RCB are 2nd with 17 points in 12 matches. Meanwhile, PBKS are 3rd with 17 points in 12 matches and MI are placed last with 16 points in 13 matches.

Notably, with GT's defeat, it opens Mumbai Indians' chance to actually finish top of the table. MI have just one match left and at max, they can finish with 18 points. 

How Can MI Go On Top Of The Table?

For MI to finish on top of the table, they now need to win their last group stage match against Punjab Kings and go to 18 points. Further, the Hardik Pandya-led side should hope for RCB to lose their remaining two matches and also CSK to beat Gujarat Titans in their last match to go on top of the table.
