Indian spinner Piyush Chawla recently recalled his IPL experience for the Mumbai Indians under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. The 2011 World Cup winner also heaped huge praise for the legendary Indian opener and current national captain.

According to Chawla, captain Rohit Sharma sets an example for other batters with his belligerent approach with the bat at the top of the order. Moreover, the leg-spinner also claimed that Sharma is one of the rare captains who works closely with the bowlers.

Piyush Chawla calls Rohit Sharma “a true leader”

While speaking with Shubhankar Mishra on the latter’s YouTube channel, Piyush Chawla praised Mumbai Indians' legend and Indian captain, Rohit Sharma. Chawla said that Sharma’s belligerent approach with the bat sets the tone at the top of the order and eases up the game situation for the rest of his teammates.

The Mumbai Indians spinner also described Rohit Sharma a ‘true leader’ of a team, and hailed his working relationship with bowlers.

Much like Piyush Chawla, legendary Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah also hailed Rohit Sharma for having empathy towards bowlers earlier this year. Back in May 2020, former Indian cricketer Pragyan Ojha made a similar statement over Sharma’s leadership, and even described him a ‘bowler’s captain’.

Piyush Chawla played the IPL 2023 season for Mumbai Indians under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. Across 16 matches of the season, the leg-spinner picked up 22 wickets at a splendid average of 22.50. The following year in IPL 2024, Chawla claimed another 13 wickets from 11 games, albeit alongside Sharma and under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya.

Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, is bracing himself to reprise his Team India colors for a short home Test series against the visiting Bangladesh team. The first of the two Tests against Bangladesh will launch on September 19 at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium.
