Rohit Sharma is a champion batter, and has proven his worth time and again across formats. A late bloomer in Test cricket, the India captain has carved a name for himself in the game's longest format.

However, it is in the ODI format that Rohit has truly excelled and showed his class. Interestingly, even in the ODIs, he was a late bloomer. Despite making his ODI debut in 2007, it took 6-long years for Rohit to permanently cement his place in the side. However, since 2013, the India captain has been one of the best batters in this format and has slammed 31 centuries.

For someone, who was touted as a slow-starter in ODIs, Rohit achieved a significant milestone, on this day, last year, when he became the second-fastest batter to score 10,000 ODI runs. A record which he achieved against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup match. The record of fastest to 10,000 ODI runs is currently being held by Rohit's teammate, Virat Kohli.

Rohit tore apart Sri Lankan bowlers before Wellalage struck

Batting first against Sri Lanka, India were off to a flying-start, courtesy, Rohit. The skipper was at his aggressive best, smashing the Lankan bowlers all-around the park as he smacked a quick-fire 53 off 48 balls.

India were set for a big total, but mystery spinner, Dunith Wellalage, spun his web and trapped Rohit, when he was set for a big total.

The Lankan spinner further dented the Indian side with wickets of Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and KL Rahul as Team India were restricted to a below-par 213. Wellalage finished with figures of 5/40 in 10 overs.

In reply, Sri Lankan batters were never really in the contest and were bundled out for a paltry 172 runs. Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 4/43.

Rohit gears up for upcoming Bangladesh challenge

Under Rohit's regime, Team India won the T20 World Cup in USA/West Indies. Following which, he announced his retirement from T20Is.

Rohit was last seen in action during the Sri Lanka ODI series, wherein he smached back-to-back fifties, but despite his efforts, the Indian team lost the series. After the series, Rohit took a mini-break, and now he gears up for the upcoming challenge in the form of Bangladesh.

The Indian side will play two-test matches against the Tigers and Rohit will be eager to register a whitewash, which will strengthen their position in the WTC points table.
